Background
What I have termed the Augustan-Saga-Shakespeare literary tradition started out with the Four Augustan Poets a little over two thousand years ago, but its philosophical roots trace back much farther to Hebrew Creation Myth as articulated in “Pythagorean” number symbolism.
Traditionally, the Four Augustan Poets are viewed as “heathen”, with Snorri Sturluson in 13th century Iceland investing ancient Creation Myth with Christian imagery. In Elizabethan England the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford (Edward Oxenford) and his “cousen” Francis Bacon brought the Christian form of ancient Creation Myth to perfection in the Shakespeare Opus and editorial work by Bacon and others on the King James Bible published in 1611.
The core theme of the Augustan-Saga-Shakespeare literary tradition is UNITY of the human experience viewed as a gradually unfolding interplay of Spirit and Matter that constitutes each person’s being. In the Saga tradition, the character of Egill Skalla-Grímsson represents archetypal Man-Beast who comes into the world of Time and Matter ignorant of the Spiritual dimension of his being.
In ancient Creation Myth, this ignorance results in tension between Two Brothers – Abel and Cain, Remus and Romulus, Höskuldr Dala-Kollsson and Hrútr Herjólfsson in Brennu-Njálssaga etc. The Two Brothers theme is reflected in “strife” between the Spiritual and Material aspects of Man, with the Material aspect (Nature) having the upper hand until, suddenly, something happens to awaken Ignorant Man to the reality of his Spiritual Essence.
In the Saga of Egill Skalla-Grímsson that “something” is the drowning in a tempest at sea of Egill’s dear “son” Böðvar – his Material Self. The “drowning” stands for Egill’s “awakening” to his Spiritual Self – his Other „late’ Son, Gunnarr. In Shakespeare’s play the “awakening” is represented by Prince Hamlet’s encounter with the Ghost of his “murdered” Father. In the Saga tradition, Egill Skalla-Grímsson is to Snorri Sturluson what Prince Hamlet’s “mortal coil” in his To-be-or-not-to-be soliloquy is to his erstwhile “dead” Spiritual Self.
In the Augustan-Saga-Shakespeare tradition, “our ever-living poet” of the Dedication of Shakespeare’s Sonnets is held to be the “author” of the Augustan-Saga-Shakespeare Opus in the sense that Plato set forth in ION. There, the continuity of thought in a literary opus through time is likened to a sequence of metallic rings where the first ring is magnetic, with its magnetism imparted to a series of rings in succession.
The “awakening” of Man to his Spiritual Self is earth-shattering. For, as King Claudius remarks of Prince Hamlet in Act II, Sc. ii: “Something have you heard Of Hamlet’s transformation; so I call it, Since nor the exterior nor the inward man Resembles that it was.”
At the outset of his account in Íslendinga saga of Snorri Sturluson’s “murder” – read: of his “mortal coil” – Sturla Þórðarson describes a dream by an Egill Halldórsson, 11358. In the context, the “dreamer” would be Snorri Sturluson, 11359, oblivious of his Spiritual Side/Monad, 1 as in 11359 – 1 = 11358. Three hundred years later, the “story” of Egill was elaborated in Shakespeare’s Sonnets, as shown below.
