AIDA – Ritorna vincitor! 8th November 2014.

Foreword.

An Italian researcher, Giancarlo Gianazza, has done extensive research on apparent close intellectual  links between Dante’s Commedia, written in the early 14th century and certain aspects of Icelandic Saga Myth, as preserved in Snorri Sturluson’s Edda and Brennu-Njálssaga (Saga of Burnt Njall) written in the 13th century. In Elizabethan England, Edward Oxenford, 17th Earl of Oxford, and Sir Francis Bacon took up the thread where Snorri and Sturla Þórðarson had left off centuries earlier.

In all these and many other works, the Saga Cipher of Snorri Sturluson, which may have been conceived and/or first used by Horace in the 1st century BC, there is “hidden poetry” on themes in ancient Creation Myth whose basic structural constancy down the centuries have made it possible for those with working command of both the Saga Cipher and such themes, to re-construct the apparent use of it by supremely talented authors in what I have termed the Augustan-Saga-Shakespeare literary tradition.

In their works, authors in the tradition typically signal the presence of “hidden poetry” by enciphering allusions to themes familiar to students of the tradition. In operatic works like Verdi’s Aida and Mozart’s Magic Flute, themes from ancient (Pythagorean) creation myth are apparent. In Aida, Retorna vincitor! is a “logical” place to look for “hidden poetry” of this kind. After my initial analysis thereof today, I carried out two brief checks. The first one involved recorded dates of Aida’s initial performances – the first one in Cairo on Christmas Eve, 24 December 1871 and the European premiere in Milan on 8 February 1872.

Ben Jonson, at the end of his ode to William Shakespeare in the First folio (1623), prays for the return of the Sweet Swan of Avon.  Shakespeare scholars construe this as presumptive proof that Will Shakspere of Stratford is being referred to. Brennu-Njálssaga features a magical character named Svanr á Svanshóli (Swan on Swan‘s Hill) the Cipher Value of whose name, 8729, is suggestive of twin interpretations of the character‘s mythical status. 1) Light of the World, 1000, Jesús Kristr, 7729 as in 1000 + 7729 = 8729, and 2) Light of the World, 1000, in its dual aspects as Macbethian/Platonic Tyrant, 729, and its End-of-Time manifestation as Microcosmos, 7000, as in 1000 + 729 + 7000 = 8729, where Microcosmos symbolizes Shakespeare´s Brave New World or Creation/Man in the Image of God.

In Commedia, the object of Dante’s Quest is Union with Beatrice. In ancient creation myth, this refers to the re-union of Monad/God’s Male and Female aspects. In Hebrew myth JHWH’s Holy Name is held to split into Male and Female parts at Seventh Day’s dawn, it being “the purpose of our world” to re-unite the two parts so that the Holy Name of JHWH may arise anew in Creation. In Hamlet’s To-be-or-not-to-be soliloquy, the Prince speaks of “a consummation devoutly to be wished” whereby he would “shuffle off his mortal coil” – free Father’s Spirit within from the spatio-temporal shackles of its material body.

The Cipher Value of the name of slave-girl Aida, 796, is immediately suggestive of “her” being a symbol for the captive/gnostic Light of the World, 1000 as in 796 + 1000 = 1796, whose “death” in a lover’s embrace is the object of Man’s Quest of the Holy Grail or GRAAL, 1796. The Quest ends where it began: on a Virgin’s Mons Veneris as described in the closing lines of Shakespeare’s Sonnets:

And so the general of hot desire

Was, sleeping, by a virgin hand disarm’d.

This brand she quenched in a cool well by,

Which from Love’s fire took heat perpetual,

Growing a bath and healthful remedy

For men diseas’d. […]

Construction of Aida’s “death” wish

The key to the construction of Aida’s Ritorna vincitor! song resides in the Cipher Sum 401006 + 4000 + 5464 = 410740, where

5464 = Íslendingabók – Book of Icelanders/Creation as Book Perfected.

Íslendingabók is said to be the work of the Father of Icelandic Saga Literature, Ari Þorgilsson, of whom little is “known” except that he is said to have “died” 9 November 1148. The name Ari, which means Eagle in Icelandic, means Lion or LEO in Hebrew. Augustan-Saga-Shakespeare Myth associates the constellation Leo with Light of the World – but that story need not be gone into here.

The Cipher Value of Ari’s full name, Ari Þorgilsson, 7998, reveals why he was called the Father of Saga Literature/Books – namely, LEO/Ari‘s association with Light of the World become Flaming Sword, 4000, as in 7998 + 4000 = 11998, in the creative act of Perfecting the Book. For this is the Cipher Sum of the Union of Penis, 2801, and Vagina, 2414, on Mons Veneris, 6783 as in 2801 + 2414 + 6783 = 11998.

Finally, the above construction sheds light on Dante’s baffling statement in Commedia: 13584 = Vergine madre, figlia del tuo figlio – Virgin Mother, Daughter of your Son – as in the Cipher Sum 3262 + 7000 + 3321 = 13584, where

3263 = Beatrice is become Brave New World or

7000 = Microcosmos – Man/Daughter in Creator’s Image on

3321 = Dies Irae/God’s Day of Wrath

A Day when „sleeping“ Man awakens to his Oneness with his Creator.

Not in a literal sense but rather in that  indicated by the phrase:

At the level of Man, God is Consciousness.

In this context, Sturla Þórðarson’s account of Snorri Sturluson’s „murder“  may be read and understood in two different ways:

1. By the dim light of ‘earthly understanding’ (jarðlig skilning) as Snorri calls it in Preface to Edda.

2. By the light of ‘spiritual wisdom“ (andlig spekðin), of which Snorri writes also in the Preface.

As evidenced by the „hidden poetry“ in Ritorna vincitor! above, the underlying meaning of such „poetry“ is never apparent in the surface text.

In the Middle Ages, the Cipher Value of Sturla’s account of Snorri’s „murder“ – read: Snorri´s metamorphosis from Lower to Higher level of understanding – appears to have been taken to represent a „standard“ Cipher Value for such metamorphosis in other works of „hidden poetry“.
