Grass Conceals And Rain Blots Out

In the Père-Lachaise cemetery, in the neighborhood of the potters’ field, far from the elegant quarter of that city of sepulchers, far from all those fantastic tombs that display in presence of eternity the hideous fashions of death, in a deserted corner, beside an old wall, beneath a great yew on which the bindweed climbs, among the dog-grass and the mosses, there is a stone.  This stone is exempt no more than the rest from the leprosy of time, from the mold, the lichen, and the birds’ droppings.  The air turns it black, the water green.  It is near no path, and people do not like to go in that direction, because the grass is high, and they would wet their feet.  All around there is a rustling of wild oats.  In spring, the linnets come to sing in the tree.

This stone is entirely blank.  The only thought in cutting it was of the essentials of the grave, and there was no other care than to make this stone long enough and narrow enough to cover a man. No name can be read there. Only many years ago, a hand wrote on it in pencil these four lines, which have gradually become illegible under the rain and the dust, and are probably gone by now:

Section III

Structure of Gylfaginning

Alpha and Omega

Snorri Sturluson‘s Gylfaginning concerns Man‘s Quest for Knowledge of Man‘s own Creation as part Matter/Earth and part Spirit. The first two chapters describe the prelude to the Instruction received by Gangleri in Háva Höll (Palace of the Highest) in the following chapters.

Immediately after Gangleri has concluded his Quest and become “Fróðari” – Wiser – Gylfaginning ends with a short Chapter 54 where Gangleri, as if awakened from a dream, finds himself on a plain field where Háva Höll and his Tri-Unite Instructor (Hárr/High, Jafnhárr/Equally high and Þriði/Third) are nowhere to be seen.

Gangleri then goes home and shares with others tales of what he has seen and heard. His listeners then related these “stories“ to others. The brief last chapter ends with a statement to the effect that at some distant time people would not “doubt“ that all the characters and events described in the tales concern ONE rather than MANY beings.

I construe this to mean that the Quest for Knowledge is INTERNAL to Man‘s Mind, defined by the stories told in Chapters 3-53.

The stones of the mosaic paving of the sacred place could be alternatively black or white, and JESUS like ASMODEUS, observing their alignment, my view seems incapable of seeing the summit where the marvellous sleeping one remained hidden.  Not being HERCULES with magic power, how to decode the mysterious symbols carved by the observers of the past.  In the sanctuary however the stoup, fountain of love of the believers, reminds us of these words: BY THIS SIGN YOU SHALL CONQUER.

Ég er fæddur (1940) og uppalinn á Melunum í Reykjavík. Stúdent úr Verzlunarskóla Íslands 1960 og með hagfræðigráður frá Manchester University (1963) og Harvard University (1965). Starfaði sem hagfræðingur við Alþjóðagjaldeyrissjóðinn frá 1966 til 1989. Var m.a. aðstoðar-landstjóri AGS í Indónesíu 1968-1969, og landstjóri í Kambódíu (1971-1972) og Suður Víet-Nam (1973-1975). Hef starfað sjálfstætt að rannsóknarverkefnum á ýmsum sviðum frá 1989, þ.m.t. peningahagfræði. Var einn af þremur stofnendum hagfræðingahóps (Gang8) 1989. Frá upphafi var markmið okkar að hafa hugsað málin í gegn þegar - ekki ef - allt færi á annan endann í alþjóðapeningakerfinu. Í október 2008 kom sú staða upp í íslenzka peninga- og fjármálakerfinu. Alla tíð síðan hef ég látið peninga- og efnahagsmál á Íslandi meira til mín taka en áður. Ég ákvað að gerast bloggari á pressan.is til að geta komið skoðunum mínum í þeim efnum á framfæri.
