Preface

Jacob’s Ladder

(Gen. Ch. 28)

28:10

And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.

28:11

And hee lighted upon a certaine place, and taried there all night, because the sunne was set; and hee tooke of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillowes, and lay downe in that place to sleepe.

28:12

And he dreamed, and beholde a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and beholde the Angels of God ascending and descending on it.

28:13

And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seede;

28:14

And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the West, and to the East, and to the North and to the South: and in thee, and in thy seed, shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

28:15

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keepe thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee againe into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

¹Abomination of Desolation

Message posted to friends on 26 February 2014:

While in Iceland last August, I met with Pétur Halldórsson at the Cafe Milano in Reykjavík. We discussed matters of mutual interest, including what my Saga Cipher work might “mean“.

I took a napkin and, for emphasis, wrote down the number 438097. This is the Cipher Sum of some three dozen names of persons, institutions, dates and events during the reference period, including two famous murder cases, a sex scandal in high places, and presumptive lies told in connection therewith.

I told Pétur (what I had long surmised) that I believed that this number was associated with a watershed event in human history whose final phase was upon our world.

An earth-shaking culmination of human and spiritual evolution.

Translation

It is a revelation to compare Menard’s Don Quixote with Cervantes’. The latter, for example, wrote (part one, chapter nine):

. . . truth, whose mother is history, rival of time, depository of deeds, witness of the past, exemplar and adviser to the present, and the future’s counselor. Written in the seventeenth century, written by the “lay genius” Cervantes, this enumeration is a mere rhetorical praise of history. Menard, on the other hand, writes:

. . . truth, whose mother is history, rival of time, depository of deeds, witness of the past, exemplar and adviser to the present, and the future’s counselor.

History, the mother of truth: the idea is astounding. Menard, a contemporary of William James, does not define history as an inquiry into reality but as its origin. Historical truth, for him, is not what has happened; it is what we judge to have happened. The final phrases—exemplar and adviser to the present, and the future’s counselor —are brazenly pragmatic.

The contrast in style is also vivid. The archaic style of Menard—quite foreign, after all—suffers from a certain affectation. Not so that of his forerunner, who handles with ease the current Spanish of his time.

There is no exercise of the intellect which is not, in the final analysis, useless. A philosophical doctrine begins as a plausible description of the universe; with the passage of the years it becomes a mere chapter—if not a paragraph or a name—in the history of philosophy. In literature, this eventual caducity is even more notorious. The Quixote —Menard told me—was, above all, an entertaining book; now it is the occasion for patriotic toasts, grammatical insolence and obscene de luxe editions. Fame is a form of incomprehension, perhaps the worst.

There is nothing new in these nihilistic verifications; what is singular is the determination Menard derived from them. He decided to anticipate the vanity awaiting all man’s efforts; he set himself to an undertaking which was exceedingly complex and, from the very beginning, futile. He dedicated his scruples and his sleepless nights to repeating an already extant book in an alien tongue. He multiplied draft upon draft, revised tenaciously and tore up thousands of manuscript pages.1 He did not let anyone examine these drafts and took care they should not survive him. In vain have I tried to reconstruct them.

I have reflected that it is permissible to see in this “final” Quixote a kind of palimpsest, through which the traces—tenuous but not indecipherable—of our friend’s “previous” writing should be translucently visible. Unfortunately, only a second Pierre Menard, inverting the other’s work, would be able to exhume and revive those lost Troys.

Background on Íslendingabók

(Wikipedia)

Íslendingabók (Book of Icelanders; Latin: Libellus Islandorum) is a historical work dealing with early Icelandic history. The author was an Icelandic priest, Ari Þorgilsson, working in the early 12th century. The work originally existed in two different versions but only the younger one has survived. The older contained information on Norwegian kings, made use of by later writers of kings’ sagas.

The priest Jón Erlendsson in Villingaholt (died 1672) in the service of bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson made two copies of Íslendingabók (now AM 113 a fol and AM 113 b fol at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies), the latter one because the bishop was unhappy with the first version. The original copied from is assumed to have dated to ca. 1200. It was lost in the course of the late 17th century, and when Árni Magnússon looked for it, it had disappeared without a trace.

Íslendingabók is a concise work which relates the major events of Icelandic history in terse prose. While the author is forced to rely almost exclusively on oral history he takes pains to establish the reliability of his sources and mentions several of them by name. He avoids supernatural material and Christian bias. The prologue of the book explicitly states that whatever might be wrong in the account must be corrected to „that which can be proven to be most true“. Due to these qualities of the work and the early time of its writing, historians consider it the most reliable extant source on early Icelandic history.

The Cipher Value 541859 set forth below represents the basic structure of what I have termed the Platonic-Augustan-Saga-Shakespeare tradition of hidden poetry on its invariant foundation in Pythagorean numerology and Ancient Creation Myth.

As shown in Appendix to the present note, the Cipher Value of this basic struction is also that of key aspects of the Shakespeare part of the tradition, including the following:

526846 = Francis Bacon´s ”Last Letter”, as in 526846 + 15013 = 541859.

535014 = “Eyewitness” account of Dies Irae, as in 535014 + 6845 = 541859.

¹Horace‘s Monument

I have created a monument more lasting than bronze and loftier than the royal pyramids, a monument which neither the biting rain nor the raging North Wind can destroy, nor can the countless years and the passing of the seasons.  I will not entirely die and a great part of me will avoid Libitina, the goddess of Death; I will grow greater and greater in times to come, kept fresh by praise.  So long as the high priest climbs the stairs of the Capitolium, accompanied by the silent Vestal Virgin, I, now powerful but from humble origins, will be said to be the first to have brought Aeolian song to Latin meter where the raging Aufidius roars and where parched Daunus ruled over the country folk.  Embrace my pride, deservedly earned, Muse, and willingly crown me with Apollo’s laurel.

²A New Breed of Men

Now the last age by Cumae’s Sibyl sung has come and gone, and the majestic roll of circling centuries begins anew: justice returns, returns old Saturn’s reign, with a new breed of men sent down from heaven.  Only do thou, at the boy’s birth in whom the iron shall cease, the golden race arise, befriend him, chaste Lucina; ‘tis thine own Apollo reigns.  And in thy consulate, this glorious age, O Pollio, shall begin, and the months enter on their mighty march.  Under thy guidance, whatso tracks remain of our old wickedness, once done away, shall free the earth from never-ceasing fear.  He shall receive the life of gods, and see heroes with gods commingling, and himself be seen of them, and with his father’s worth reign o’er a world of peace.

APPENDIX

A

Francis Bacon‘s Last Letter

Every schoolboy knows the story told in their history books how Francis Bacon one snowy day on or about All Fools Day, 1 April 1626, drove with the King’s Physician, Sir John Wedderburn, to Highgate and that at the foot of the Hill he stopped, bought a fowl, and stuffed it with snow with his own hands in order to ascertain whether bodies could be preserved by cold.  During the procedure, we are told, he caught a chill, and instead of Dr. Wedderburn driving him back to Gray’s Inn (whence he had come) or taking him to some warm house, the worthy doctor took him to an empty summer mansion on Highgate Hill, Arundel House, where there was only a caretaker; and there Francis Bacon was put into a bed which was damp and had only been “warmed by a Panne” (a very strange thing for a doctor to do) with the result that within a few days he died of pneumonia.  Dr. Rawley, his chaplain, says that he died “in the early morning of the 9th April, a day on which was COMMEMORATED the Resurrection of Our Saviour”.

That is the story and this is Francis Bacon’s last letter [see I. below]:

Here the letter ends abruptly.  Whatever else was written has been suppressed by Sir Tobie Matthew, one of the Rosicrosse, on which Spedding remarks, “It is a great pity the editor did not think fit to print the whole.”  For some mysterious reason the letter was not printed until 1669 in Matthew’s Collection, captioned “This was the last letter that he ever wrote.” (Francis Bacon’s Personal Life-Story, Rider&Co, London, 1986, pp. 539-540)

Medieval myth tells of a British laborer by name of Turchill, whose Soul was taken from his Body so that he might witness the torments that await the wicked and the rewards of the righteous when Seventh Day is done.  The following is his „eye-witness“ account.

When the servants of Hell were all seated at this shameful scene.

(“Eye-witness account)

535014

  29178 = When the servants of Hell were all seated at this shameful scene,

24450 = the Chief of that wicked troop said to his satellites,

21582 = “Let the proud man be violently dragged from his seat,

12031 = and let him sport before us.“

13096 = After he had been dragged from his seat

10371 = and clothed in a black garment,

25102 = he, in the presence of the devils, who applauded him in turn,

23138 = imitated all the gestures of a man proud beyond measure;

15155 = he stretched his neck, elevated his face,

19159 = cast up his eyes, with the brows arched,

32861 = imperiously thundered forth lofty words, shrugged his shoulders,

17518 = and scarcely could he bear his arms for pride:

19533 = his eyes glowed, he assumed a threatening look,

22250 = rising on tiptoe, he stood with crossed legs,

23845 = expanded his chest, stretched his neck, glowed in his face,

17007 = showed signs of anger in his fiery eyes,

17722 = and striking his nose with his finger,

15275 = gave impression of great threats;

19375 = and thus swelling with inward pride,

25990 = he afforded ready subject of laughter to the inhuman spirits.

20831 = And whilst he was boasting about his dress,

16471 = and was fastening gloves by sewing,

20700 = his garments on a sudden were turned to fire,

23472 = which consumed the entire body of the wretched being;

18423 = lastly the devils, glowing with anger,

  30479 = tore the wretch limb from limb with prongs and fiery iron hooks.

535014

As in:

535014 – 4000 + 7524 + 3321 = 541859, where

-4000 = Dark Sword – Man-Beast

7524 = The Second Coming

3321 = Dies Irae

Vituð ér enn – eða hvat?

Í bók sinni Snorri Skáld í Reykholti segir Gunnar Benediktsson m.a. svo:  „Í vitund almennings er Snorri Sturluson fyrsti Íslendingurinn, sem gerist handbendi norska konungsvaldsins til að fá Íslendinga til að ganga því á hönd.  Jón Sigurðsson forseti segir á einum stað um þetta efni:

‘Minning hans hefur að vísu verið fræg meðal Íslendinga, en aldrei

mjög vinsæl, því menn hafa eignað honum allmikinn þátt á að landið

Viðauki – Völuspá

Vinnuplagg, 2005

[…]  Af því að handritin eru ekki runnin frá sameiginlegu frumriti, er erfitt að gera sér grein fyrir skyldleik þeirra.” (bls. 3)

Það sem Sigurði sýnist vera „fráleitt” að gefnum ákveðnum forsendum þarf ekki nauðsynlega að liggja í hlutarins eðli, heldur í þeim forsendum sem hann og aðrir ritskýrendur hafa gengið út frá sem vísum og óumdeilanlegum að því er varðar ætlaðan aldur Völuspár og stöðu verksins í þeim hugmyndaheimi, sem endurspeglast í Eddu Snorra Sturlusonar og Íslendingasögum 13. aldar.

Vinnuplagg þetta er hugsað sem nokkurs konar viðauki við samantekt höfundar í vinnuplagginu ‘Egill Skalla-Grímsson – Konungr Háva Hallar’, dags. 1. feb., 2005.  Í stuttu máli, þá er tilgáta höfundar sú, að Völuspá sé samtíma fylgi- og skýringarit þess sem er ‘hulit kveðit’ í helztu ritverkum ónafngreindra höfðuðskálda 13. aldar – Snorra Sturlusonar og Sturlu Þórðarsonar.

Að því er varðar forneskjulegt yfirbragð Völuspár, þá er um tvennt að ræða – að kvæðið sé í raun miklu eldra en ritverk 13. aldar eða að ónafngreindur (-ir) höfundur (-ar) Egilssögu og Njálu hafi sniðið Völuspá yfirbragð sem endurspeglaði rithátt og hugmyndaheim fyrir og um Kristnitöku, þegar frummyndir (archetypes – Egill og Njáll) ritverka 13. aldar eru sagðar hafa verið uppi.

Varðandi efni Völuspár, þá hafa ritskýrendur talið hana varða Sköpun Heims í nútímaskilningi en ekki þann Microcosm eða Veröld í Rúmi og Tíma, sem fornar sköpunarsagnir jafna til Manns sem ímynd Skapandi Máttar Alheims.  Ef Völuspá varðar þróun Manns sem Örheims, þá blasir við skýring á því, hvers vegna EK lokasetningar Njálu kveður sér hljóðs í Upphafi Völuspár.

Í hebreskri Kabbalaspeki er EK síðasti áfangi holdtekningar Guðdóms í þeirri Ímynd Guðdóms, sem er Maður alias Veröld í Rúmi og Tíma.  EK er ‘Sannr Maðr ok Sannr Guð’, sem Páfadómur telur hafa heimsótt veröld fyrir 2000 árum og síðan ekki meir.  „Þat ætla ek, at þú kveðir betr en páfinn,” segir Konungr við Sturlu Þórðarson í 2. k. Sturlu þáttar og liggur þar fiskur undir steini.

Í hebreskri fornspeki var Hugsun Guðs talin vera Alfa og Omega jafnt sem hreyfikraftur þeirrar heimsrásar, sem sögð var endurspeglast í hverjum bókstaf, orði, setningu, og málsgrein Torah (Fimm Mósesbókum).  Hver bókstafur í hebreska (og gríska) stafrófinu hafði ákveðið tölugildi og var bókstafstexti Torah talinn endurspegla í mynd tölugilda Hugsun Guðs, sem bjó að baki.

Af niðurstöðum rannsókna Einars Pálssonar á landnámssögnum og ritverkum feðranna má ráða, að þessi forn-hebreska og gríska hugmynd um ritað mál sem dulbúning fyrir tölvísi alheims var lykilatriði í hugmyndaheimi feðranna – sbr. einnig áeggjan Snorra í 8. kafla Skáldskaparmála til ungra skálda, sem vildu læra að ‘skilja þat, er hulit er kveðit’, að þau yrðu að ‘skilja þessa bók’.

Hér má einnig geta umsagnar Uppsalabókar Eddu, sem höfundur fær ekki skilið á annan veg en þann, að þar sé lýst hugmyndum forn-hebrea og grikkja um samband ritmáls og hreyfikrafts tilveru: Munnrinn ok tungan er leikvöllr orðanna.  Á þeim velli eru reistir stafir þeir, er mál allt gera, ok hendir málit ýmsa svá til at jafna sem hörpu strengir eða eru læster lyklar í simphonie.

The Phoenix and the Turtle

The Phoenix and the Turtle is an allegorical poem about the death of ideal love by William Shakespeare. It is widely considered to be one of his most obscure works and has led to many conflicting interpretations. It has also been called „the first great published metaphysical poem“. (Wikipedia)

The following error-filled version of the Poem’s Threnos section

Contains the acrostic FRANCISCO BACONO – BY FRANCIS BACON.

¹Draumur Hafliða

(Ísl. s., 122. k.)

Maðr hét Hafliði Höskuldsson, bróðir Sighvats auðga.

Hann dreymdi um vetrinn eftir jól, þá er Melaför var, at hann var úti staddr á Kolbeinsstöðum, þar átti hann heima í Haugatungu. Hann sá, at leikr var sleginn þar skammt frá garði ok váru karlar einir at.  Þat var knattleikr.

Þá gekk gráklæddr maðr mikill ofan frá Mýdal, ok biðu þeir þess at leiknum.  Þeir fréttu hann at nafni.

Hann kvað:

Kár kalla mik.

Emk kominn heðra

heim at skelfa

ok hugi manna,

borgir brjóta

ok boga sveigja,

elda at auka

Hann dreymdi ok annan draum litlu síðar, at hann þóttist vera í Fagraskógi ok þóttist sjá upp eftir Hítardal ok sá ríða ofan eftir dalnum flokk manna. Kona fór fyrir liðinu, mikil ok illilig, ok hafði dúk í hendi ok á rauftrefr niðr ok blæddi ór.

Annarr flokkr fór á móti þeim frá Svarfhóli –

ok mættust út frá Hrauni ok börðust þar.

Kona þessi brá dúkinum yfir höfuð þeim,

ok er raufin kom á hálsinn,

þá kippti hon höfðinu af hverjum þeira.

Hon kvað:

Veg ek með dreyrgum dúki.

Drep ek menn í hyr þenna,

en hlægir mik ærit

ill vist, þars þeir gista.

This was the last letter that he ever wrote

© Gunnar Tómasson

Background

 (Alfred Dodd)

526846

I. Francis Bacon’s Last Letter

(Easter Morning 1626)

14285 = To the Earle of Arundel and Surrey.

7470 = My very good Lord:

27393 = I was likely to have had the fortune of Caius Plinius the Elder,

19392 = who lost his life by trying an experiment

21445 = about the burning of the mountain Vesuvius.

27312 = For I was also desirous to try an experiment or two,

23426 = touching the conservation and induration of bodies.

27127 = As for the experiment itself, it succeeded excellently well;

19881 = but in the journey between London and Highgate,

18137 = I was taken with such a fit of casting,

20866 = as I knew not whether it were the stone,

24599 = or some surfeit of cold, or indeed a touch of them all three.

19809 = But when I came to your Lordship’s house,

20992 = I was not able to go back, and therefore was forced

10541 = to take up my lodging here,

27187 = where your housekeeper is very careful and diligent about me;

10692 = which I assure myself

24956 = your Lordship will not only pardon towards him,

14898 = but think the better of him for it.

21030 = For indeed your Lordship’s house is happy to me;

18831 = and I kiss your noble hands for the welcome

15120 = which I am sure you give me to it.

30197 = I know how unfit it is for me to write to your lordship

15772 = with any other hand than mine own;

32508 = but in troth my fingers are so disjointed with this fit of sickness,

12980 = that I cannot steadily hold a pen…

¹ Haugvísa Gunnars

(Brennu-Njálssaga, 78. kafli – M)

Sá atburðr varð at Hlíðarenda, at smalamaðr ok griðkona ráku fé hjá haugi Gunnars; þeim þótti Gunnarr vera kátr ok kveða í hauginum.  Fóru þau heim ok sögðu Rannveigu, móður Gunnars, atburðinn, en hon bað þau segja Njáli; þau gerðu svá, en hann lét þau segja sér þrim sinnum.  Síðan talaði hann lengi hljótt við Skarpheðin; Skarpheðinn tók öxi sína ok ferr með þeim til Hlíðarenda.  Þau Högni ok Rannveig tóku við honum allvel ok urðu honum fegin mjök; Rannveig bað hann vera þar lengi, ok hann hét því.  Þeir Högni gingu út ok inn jafnan.  Högni var maðr vaskligr ok vel at sér görr ok tortryggr; þorðu þau eigi af því at segja honum fyrirburðinn.

Þeir Skarpheðinn ok Högni váru úti eitt kveld fyrir sunnan haug Gunnars; tunglskin var bjart, en stundum dró fyrir.  Þeim sýndisk haugrinn opinn, ok hafði Gunnarr snúizk í hauginum ok sá í móti tunglinu; þeir þóttusk fjögur ljós sjá brenna í hauginum, ok bar hvergi skugga á.  Þeir sá, at Gunnar var kátligr ok með gleðimóti miklu.  Hann kvað vísu ok svá hátt, at þó mátti heyra görla, þó at þeir væri firr;

7891 = Mætti daugla deilir,

7744 = dáðum rakkr, sá er háði

10175 = bjartr með beztu hjarta

7120 = benrögn, faðir Högna:

9605 = vættidraugr en vægja,

9033 = val-Freyju stafr, deyja –

  9033 = val-Freyju stafr, deyja.

80042

Síðan lauksk aptr haugrinn.

„Myndir þú trúa,” segir Skarpheðinn, „fyrirburð þessum, ef Njáll segði þér?”

„Trúa mynda ek, ef Njáll segði mér,” segir Högni, „því at þat er sagt, at hann ljúgi aldri.”

„Mikit er um fyrirburði slíka,” segir Skarpheðinn, „er hann sjálfr vitrask okkr, at hann vildi heldr deyja en vægja fyrir óvinum sínum, ok kenndi hann okkr þau ráð.”

„Engu mun ek til leiðar koma,” segir Högni, „nema þú vilir mér at veita.”

Skarpheðinn mælti:  „Nú skal ek þat muna, hversu Gunnari fór eptir víg Sigmundar, frænda yðvars. Skal ek nú veita þér slíkt, er ek má; hét faðir minn því Gunnari, þar er þú ættir hlut at eða móðir hans.”

Gengu þeir síðan heim til Hlíðarenda.

² Samkvæmt hebreskum fræðimanni, sem Einar Pálsson vísar til í ritsafni sínu, Rætur íslenzkrar menningar, er það grundvallar stef gyðingdóms að Heilagt Nafn JHWH (10-5-6-5 skv. hebreskri gematríu) klofni í miðju í upphafi Sjöunda Dags Sköpunar – í karl- og kvenkyns hluta. „Tilgangur veraldar okkar”, segir síðan, er að Heilagt Nafn JHWH rísi á ný sem Eitt Hold Manns og Konu.

I. Requiem and Kyrie

Chorus

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord;

and may perpetual light shine upon them.

A hymn in Zion befits you, O God,

and a debt will be paid to you in Jerusalem.

Hear my prayer:

all earthly flesh will come to you.

Quartet and Chorus

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

II. Sequence

The day of wrath, that day will
dissolve the world in ashes,
as David and the Sibyl prophesied.

How great will be the terror,
when the Judge comes
who will smash everything completely!

The trumpet, scattering a marvelous sound
through the tombs of every land,
will gather all before the throne.

Death and Nature shall stand amazed,
when all Creation rises again
to answer to the Judge.

A written book will be brought forth,
which contains everything
for which the world will be judged.

Therefore when the Judge takes His seat,
whatever is hidden will be revealed:
nothing shall remain unavenged.

The day of wrath, that day will
dissolve the world in ashes,
as David and the Sibyl prophesied.

What can a wretch like me say?
Whom shall I ask to intercede for me,
when even the just ones are unsafe?

King of dreadful majesty.
who freely saves the redeemed ones,
save me, O font of pity.

Recall, merciful Jesus,
that I was the reason for your journey:
do not destroy me on that day.

In seeking me, you sat down wearily;
enduring the Cross, you redeemed me:
do not let these pains to have been in vain.

Just Judge of punishment:
give me the gift of redemption
before the day of reckoning.

I groan as a guilty one,
and my face blushes with guilt;
spare the supplicant, O God.

You, who absolved Mary Magdalen,
and heard the prayer of the thief,
have given me hope, as well.

My prayers are not worthy,
but show mercy, O benevolent one,
lest I burn forever in fire.

Give me a place among the sheep,
and separate me from the goats,
placing me on your right hand.

When the damned are silenced,
and given to the fierce flames,
call me with the blessed ones.

I pray, suppliant and kneeling,
with a heart contrite as ashes:
take my ending into your care.

The day of wrath, that day will
dissolve the world in ashes,
as David and the Sibyl prophesied.

That day is one of weeping,
on which shall rise from the ashes
the guilty man, to be judged.
Therefore, spare this one, O God.

Merciful Lord Jesus:
grant them peace.
Amen.

III. Offertorio

Quartet

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory:

deliver the souls of all the faithful

dead from the pains of hell and from the

deep pit; deliver them from the mouth of the lion;

that hell may not swallow them, and

that they may not fall into darkness.

But may the holy standard-bearer Michael

show them the holy light;

which you once promised to Abraham and his descendents.

We offer to you, O Lord, sacrifices and prayers.

Receive them on behalf of those souls whom we commemorate today.

Grant, O Lord, that they might pass from death into that life

which you once promised to Abraham and his descendents.

Deliver the souls of all the faithful dead from the pains of hell;

Grant that they might pass from death into that life.

 IV. Sanctus

Double Chorus

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth.

Heaven and earth are filled with your glory.

Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest!

V. Agnus Dei

Soprano, Mezzo-soprano, and Chorus

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest everlasting.

VI. Lux aeterna

Mezzo-soprano, Tenor and Bass

Let eternal light shine upon them, O Lord,

with your saints forever; for you are merciful.

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them

with your saints forever; for you are merciful.

VII. Libera me

Soprano and Chorus

Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death on that awful day,

when the heavens and the earth shall be moved:

when you will come to judge the world by fire.

I tremble, and I fear the judgment and the wrath to come,

when the heavens and the earth shall be moved.

The day of wrath, that day of calamity and misery;

a great and bitter day, indeed.

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,

and may perpetual light shine upon them.

Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that awful day.

Deliver me, O Lord, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved;

when you will come to judge the world by fire.

Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that awful day.

Deliver me.

The Killing of Cæsar in Act III, Sc. i of Shakespeare’s play is analogous to the ”death” of Hamlet in that it represents “death” from the globe’s “rotten state” as conveyed by the Soothsayer’s words in response to Cæsar’s opening remark: The Ides of March are come:

Soothsayer

Celeste Aida

RAD.

What if ’tis I am chosen?

Ah my dream be now accomplished

Of a glorious army

I the chosen leader — mine glorious victory —

By Memphis received in triumph!

To thee returned, Aida, my brow entwined with laurel —

Tell thee, for thee I battled, for thee I conquered!

Heav’nly Aida, beauty resplendent,

Radiant flower blooming and bright;

Queenly thou reignest o’er me transcendent,

Bathing my spirit in beauty’s light.

Would that thy bright skies once more beholding,

Breathing the soft airs of thy native land;

Round thy fair brow a diadem folding,

Thine were a throne next the sun to stand.

Ritorna Vincitor

AIDA

Return victorious!
And from my lips came the impious word!
Victorious over my father
And his troops wielding their weapons for me
To rescue me and tack me back to my homeland,
My royal palace and my illustrious name
That here I am forced to conceal!
Victorious over my brothers I may see him,
Blood stained loved,
Triumph in the acclamation by Egypt’s forces!
And behind his chariot,
A King, my father in chains!

These insane words, oh gods, please forget!
Let the daughter return to her father’s breast,
Destroy the squadrons of our oppressor!
Ah! unfortunate! What did I say?
And my love?
Can I then forget this ardent love
That, oppressed and enslaved,
is like the blessed rays of the sun?
I curse the death of Radames
to him whom I love so much though!
Ah! there has never been anything as cruel as this
Anguish of a broken heart!

The sacred names of my father and my lover,
Neither of which I can call upon
I am confused for each one, I am trembling
I cry, I pray.
But my prayer changes to cursing
Crime is the fault of my tears and sighs
In the dark night, my mind is lost
And I would die in this cruel world.

Gods, have pity on my suffering!
There is no hope for my sorrow
Fatal love, tremendous love
Break my heart and let me die!

AIDA Final Scene

The scene is divided into two floors.

The upper floor represents the interior of the temple of Vulcan, resplendent with gold and glittering light; the lower floor is a Crypt. — Long Arcades vanishing in the gloom. — Colossal Statues of Osiris with crossed hands support the pillars of the vault.

Radames is discovered in the Crypt, on the steps of the staircase leading into the vault. — Above, two  Priests in the act of letting down the stone which closes the subterranean.

RAD.

The fatal stone upon me now is closing,

Now has the tomb engulfed me. I never more

The light shall behold. Ne’er more see gentle Aida.

Dear Aida, where now art thou? whate’er befalls me

May’st thou be happy. Ne’er may my frightful doom

Reach thy gentle ear. What groan was that? Tis a phantom!

Some vision dread. No! sure that form is human!

Heaven! ’tis Aida.

AIDA

Yes! Aida!

RAD.

Thou, with me here buried!

AIDA

My heart forboded this thy dreadful sentence,

And to this tomb that shuts on thee its portal

I crept unseen by mortal.

Here from all where none can behold us,

Clasped in thy arms I resolved to perish.

RAD.

To perish! so pure and lovely!

To die, thine own self dooming,

In all thy beauty blooming,

Fade thus forever!

Thou whom the heav’n only for love created

But to destroy thee was my love then fated!

Ah no! those eyes

So dear I prize

For death are too lovely!

AIDA

[transported]  See’st thou where death in angel guise

With heavenly radiance beaming,

Would waft us to eternal joys

On golden wings above!

See heaven’s gates are open wide

Where tears are never streaming,

Where only bliss and joy reside

And never fading love!

Singing and dancing of the Priestesses in the Temple.

AIDA

That sad chanting!

RAD.

‘Tis the sacred dance

Of the Priesthood!

AIDA

It is our death chant resounding!

RAD.

[trying to displace the stone closing the vault]

Cannot my lusty sinews

Move from its place this fatal stone?

AIDA

‘Tis vain! all is over

Hope on earth have we none!

RAD.

[with sad resignation]

I fear it! I fear it!

[approaches Aida and supports her]

AIDA – RAD.

Farewell, O earth! farewell thou vale of sorrow!

Brief dream of joy condemned to end in woe!

See, brightly opens the sky, an endless morrow

There all unshadowed eternal shall glow!

[Aida drops in the arms of Radames]

AMN.

[appears, habited in mourning, in the temple, and throws

herself on the stone closing the vault]

Peace everlasting, lov’d one, mayst thou know

Isis, relenting, greet thee on high!

Hvernig skal Krist kenna? – How shall Christ be taught?

http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/pre/pre05.htm

How should one periphrase Christ? Thus: by calling Him Fashioner of Heaven and Earth, of Angels, and of the Sun; Governor of the World and of the Heavenly Kingdom and of Jerusalem and Jordan and the Land of the Greeks; Counsellor of the Apostles and of the Saints. Ancient skalds have written of Him in metaphors of Urdr’s Well and Rome; as Eilífr Gudrúnarson sang:

So has Rome’s Mighty Ruler
In the Rocky Realms confirmèd
His power; they say He sitteth
South, at the Well of Urdr.

Thus sang Skapti Thóroddssen:

The King of Monks is greatest
Of might, for God all governs;
Christ’s power wrought this earth all,
And raised the Hall of Rome.

King of the Heavens, as Markús sang:

The King of the Wind-House fashioned
Earth, sky, and faithful peoples;
Christ, sole Prince of Mortals,
Hath power o’er all that liveth.

Thus sang Eilífr Kúlnasveinn:

The Host of the beaming World’s Roof
And the Band of Illustrious bow down
To the Holy Cross; than all glory
Else the Sole Sun’s King is brighter.

Son of Mary, as Eilífr sang further:

The bright Host of Heaven boweth
To Mary’s Bairn: He winneth,
The Gentle Prince, of glory
The true might, God and man both.

King of Angels, as Eilífr sang again:

The goodly might of God’s friend
Is better than men guess of;
Yet the Gracious King of Angels
Is dearer than all, and holier.

King of Jordan, as Sigvatr sang:

Four angels the King of Jordan
Sent long ago through aether
To earthward; and the stream washed
The holy head of the World’s Lord.

King of Greeks, as Arnórr sang:

I have lodged for the hero’s ashes
Prayers with the Lordly Warder
Of Greeks and men of Gardar:
Thus I pay my Prince for good gifts.

Thus sang Eilífr Kúlnasveinn:

The Glory of Heaven praises
Man’s Prince: He is King of all things.

Here he called Christ, first, King of Men, and again, King of All. Eínarr Skúlason sang:

He who compasseth, Bright in Mercy,
All the world, and gently careth
For all, caused the realm of Heaven
To ope for the valiant ruler.

Ég ákvað að gerast bloggari á pressan.is til að geta komið skoðunum mínum í þeim efnum á framfæri.
