29:5

20325 = Moreouer the multitude of thy strangers

9311 = shalbe like small dust,

29:11

16598 = And the vsion of all is become vnto you         [vsion, KJB 1611 text]

16125 = as the wordes of a booke that is sealed,

17547 = which men deliuer to one that is learned,

11090 = saying, Reade this, I pray thee:

14649 = and hee saith, I cannot, for it is sealed:

29:12

21003 = And the booke is deliuered to him that is not learned,

11090 = saying, Reade this, I pray thee:

10004 = and he saith, I am not learned.

29:13

10901 = Wherefore the Lord said,

27560 = Forasmuch as this people draw neere mee with their mouth,

15688 = and with their lips doe honour me,

17767 = but haue remoued their heart farre from me,

25026 = and their feare towards mee is taught by the precept of men:

29:14

16197 = Therefore behold, I will proceed to do

19770 = a marueilous worke amongst this people,

17491 = euen a marueilous worke and a wonder:

22681 = for the wisedome of their wise men shall perish,

22369 = and the vnderstanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

29:15

13872 = Woe unto them that seeke deepe

16414 = to hide their counsell from the LORD,

18244 = and their workes are in the darke, and they say,

18179 = Who seeth vs? And who knoweth vs?

29:16

22704 = Surely your turning of things vpside downe

15276 = shall be esteemed as the potters clay:

18095 = for shall the worke say of him that made it,

4594 = He made me not?

19652 = or shall the thing framed, say of him that framed it,

9304 = He had no vnderstanding?

29:17

14908 = Is it not yet a very litle while,

19456 = and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field

21577 = and the fruitfull field shall be esteemed as a forrest?

29:18

22136 = And in that day shall the deafe heare the words of the booke,

21556 = and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscuritie,

8957 = and out of darkenesse.

29:19

20391 = The meeke also shall increase their ioy in the LORD,

24378 = and the poore among men shall reioice in the holy One of Israel.

29:20

20513 = For the terrrible one is brought to nought,

12677 = and the scorner is consumed,

19540 = and all that watch for iniquitie are cut off:

29:21

15611 = That make a man an offendour for a word,

19692 = and lay a snare for him that reproueth in the gate,

20128 = and turne aside the iust for a thing of nought.

29:22

21877 = Therefore thus saith the LORD who redeemed Abraham,

12368 = concerning the house of Iacob:

12112 = Iacob shall not now be ashamed,

16487 = neither shall his face now waxe pale.

29:23

13836 = But when hee seeth his children

18251 = the worke of mine hands in the midst of him,

10957 = they shall sanctifie my Name,

12757 = and sanctifie the Holy One of Iacob,

11484 = and shall feare the God of Israel.

29:24

26482 = They also that erred in spirit shall come to vnderstanding,

19267 = and they that murmured, shall learne doctrine.

¹Abomination of Desolation

Message posted to friends on 26 February 2014:

While in Iceland last August, I met with Pétur Halldórsson at the Cafe Milano in Reykjavík. We discussed matters of mutual interest, including what my Saga Cipher work might “mean“.

I took a napkin and, for emphasis, wrote down the number 438097. This is the Cipher Sum of some three dozen names of persons, institutions, dates and events during the reference period, including two famous murder cases, a sex scandal in high places, and presumptive lies told in connection therewith.

I told Pétur (what I had long surmised) that I believed that this number was associated with a watershed event in human history whose final phase was upon our world.

An earth-shaking culmination of human and spiritual evolution.

²Four Royal Stars

http://ascensionglossary.com/index.php/Four_Royal_Stars

The Four Royal Stars also called Archangel Stars are; Aldebaran (Michael), Regulus (Raphael), Antares (Uriel), and Fomalhaut (Gabriel). They are the brightest stars in their constellations and are considered the four guardians of the heavens. They mark seasonal changes of the year at the equinoxes and solstices. Aldebaran watches the Eastern sky and is the dominant star in the Taurus constellation. Regulus watches the North and is the dominant star in the Leo constellation. Antares watches the West and is the alpha star in Scorpio. Fomalhaut watches the Southern sky as the brightest star in Piscis Austrinus.

Cosmic Time Cycle

The East-West Axis of Aldebaran (Taurus) and Antares (Scorpio) as a pair, form the demarcation points of East and West that make the circuit through the Precession of the Equinoxes. This point is measured through the alignments made between these two stars and the Sun’s path, at their axis of rotation made around the Galactic Center. When these two stars are paired in the rotational measurement of equal axis alignment, this event marks the opening of the cosmic time cycle. When The Golden Gate activated recently, this reversed the positional movement of the East –West axis as per directed in the Divine Infinite Calculus. This is saying that these stars have changed their positions in the Galaxy from their previous time cycle, from the perspective of Cosmic Time. These stars form the Four Cardinal Directions (N-S-E-W) measured in the Cosmic Time Cycle, which are being adjusted to the Cosmic Compass designed by Divine Infinite Calculus. The new celestial direction in the cosmic time cycle form the Crown of the Magi, which is a type of Cosmic Celestial Time Calendar that opens Infinity. This is why they are referred to as the Four Royal Stars. At the end of the Precession of Equinoxes, they adjust position and form the Crown of the Magi. Those that wear this Celestial Crown are able to contact infinity, however, they must be embodied Christ Consciousness.

³World Age of Degeneration

 (Giorgio Santillana, Hamlet’s Mill)

Here is a character [Prince Hamlet] deeply present to our awareness, in whom ambiguities and uncertainties, tormented self-questioning and dispassionate insight give a presentiment of the modern mind.  His personal drama was that he had to be a hero, but still try to avoid the role Destiny assigned him.  His lucid intellect remained above the conflict of motives – in other words, his was and is a truly contemporary consciousness.  And yet this character whom the poet made one of us, the first unhappy intellectual, concealed a past as a legendary being, his features predetermined, preshaped by long-standing myth.  There was a numinous aura around him, and many clues led up to him.  But it was a surprise to find behind the mask an ancient and all-embracing cosmic power – the original master of the dreamed-of first age of the world.

Yet in all his guises he remained strangely himself.  The original Amlóði, as his name was in Icelandic legend, shows the same characteristics of melancholy and high intellect.  He, too, is a son dedicated to avenge his father, a speaker of cryptic but inescapable truths, an elusive carrier of Fate who must yield once his mission is accomplished and sink once more into concealment in the depths of time to which he belongs:  Lord of the Golden Age, the Once and Future King.

[…]

Amlóði was identified, in the crude and vivid imagery of the Norse, by the ownership of a fabled mill which, in his own time, ground out peace and plenty.  Later, in decaying times, it ground out salt; and now finally, having landed at the bottom of the sea, it is grinding rock and sand, creating a vast whirlpool, the Maelstrom (i.e. the grinding stream, from the [Icelandic] verb mala, „to grind“), which is supposed to be a way to the land of the dead.  This imagery stands, as the evidence develops, for an astronomical process, the secular shifting of the sun through the signs of the zodiac which determines world-ages, each numbering thousands of years.  Each age brings a World Era, a Twilight of the Gods.  Great structures collapse; pillars topple which supported the great fabric; floods and cataclysms herald the shaping of a new world. (Hamlet’s Mill – An Essay on Myth and the Frame of Time, 1969; Second Paperback Edition, David R. Godine, Publisher, Boston, 1983, pp. 1-2.)

¹Four Royal Stars

http://ascensionglossary.com/index.php/Four_Royal_Stars

© Gunnar Tómasson

17 April 2018

Foreword

Je reste avec vous – I remain with you

”According to his wishes Cocteau [1889-1963] is buried beneath the floor of the Chapelle Saint-Blaise des Simples in Milly-la-Forêt. The epitaph on his gravestone set in the floor of the chapel reads: „I remain with you“ („Je reste avec vous“).“

Cocteau on Cipher Poetry

”My work is the result of serious considerations which consist of turning ciphers into numbers.“

”Every poem is a coat of arms. It must be deciphered.“

Cocteau on Cipher Poetry

Composition

”The poet, by composing poems, uses a language that is neither dead nor living, that few people speak, and few people understand … We are the servants of an unknown force that lives within us, and dictates this language to us.“ http://quintessentialpublications.com/twyman/?page_id=26

Le Serpent Rouge – Serpent-Sagittarius-Capricorn

(Williamson/Hughes translation)

Serpent # 11

The vile lead of my writing

contains perhaps the purest gold

Cursing the profaners in their ashes and those who live in their tracks, leaving the abyss where I was plunged in finishing the gesture of horror: “Here is the proof that I knew the secret of the Seal of SOLOMON, that of this QUEEN I have visited the hidden residences”. To this, Dear Reader, be careful not to add or remove an iota… meditate, meditate again, the vile lead of my writing contains perhaps the purest gold.”

Sagittarius # 12

The enormous beast unleashed

Returning then to the white hill, the sky having opened its gates, it seems there is a presence near me, the feet in the water like him who has just been baptised, turning myself again towards the east facing me I saw unrolling without end, his coils, the enormous SERPENT ROUGE cited in the parchments, salty and bitter, the enormous beast unleashed became at the foot of this white hill, red with anger.

Capricorn # 13

GOOD comes to him THAT DOES GOOD

My emotion was great “DELIVER ME FROM THE MIRE” I said, and I awoke immediately. I haven’t told you in fact that this was a dream that I’d had this 17th JANUARY, feast day of Saint SULPICE. Afterwards my trouble persisting, I wanted after reflection to tell you a story by PERRAULT. Here then, Dear Reader, in the pages which follow the result of a dream having soothed me into the world of the strange and unknown. GOOD comes to him THAT DOES GOOD.

Newton, the Man

The Last of the Magicians

(John Maynard Keynes)

In the eighteenth century and since, Newton came to be thought of as the first and greatest of the modern age of scientists, a rationalist, one who taught us to think on the lines of cold and untinctured reason.

I do not see him in this light. I do not think that anyone who has pored over the contents of that box which he packed up when he finally left Cambridge in 1696 and which, though partly dispersed, have come down to us, can see him like that. Newton was not the first of the age of reason. He was the last of the magicians, the last of the Babylonians and Sumerians, the last great mind which looked out on the visible and intellectual world with the same eyes as those who began to build our intellectual inheritance rather less than 10,000 years ago. Isaac Newton, a posthumous child born with no father on Christmas Day, 1642, was the last wonder-child to whom the Magi could do sincere and appropriate homage.

Why do I call him a magician? Because he looked on the whole universe and all that is in it as a riddle, as a secret which could be read by applying pure thought to certain evidence, certain mystic clues which God had laid about the world to allow a sort of philosopher’s treasure hunt to the esoteric brotherhood. He believed that these clues were to be found partly in the evidence of the heavens and in the constitution of elements (and that is what gives the false suggestion of his being an experimental natural philosopher), but also partly in certain papers and traditions handed down by the brethren in an unbroken chain back to the original cryptic revelation in Babylonia. He regarded the universe as a cryptogram set by the Almighty – just as he himself wrapt the discovery of the calculus in a cryptogram when he communicated with Leibniz. By pure thought, by concentration of mind, the riddle, he believed, would be revealed to the initiate.

http://ascensionglossary.com/index.php/Four_Royal_Stars

Grass Conceals And Rain Blots Out

(Les Misérables, Omega Chapter)

In the Père-Lachaise cemetery, in the neighborhood of the potters’ field, far from the elegant quarter of that city of sepulchers, far from all those fantastic tombs that display in presence of eternity the hideous fashions of death, in a deserted corner, beside an old wall, beneath a great yew on which the bindweed climbs, among the dog-grass and the mosses, there is a stone.  This stone is exempt no more than the rest from the leprosy of time, from the mold, the lichen, and the birds’ droppings.  The air turns it black, the water green.  It is near no path, and people do not like to go in that direction, because the grass is high, and they would wet their feet.  All around there is a rustling of wild oats.  In spring, the linnets come to sing in the tree.

This stone is entirely blank.  The only thought in cutting it was of the essentials of the grave, and there was no other care than to make this stone long enough and narrow enough to cover a man. No name can be read there. Only many years ago, a hand wrote on it in pencil these four lines, which have gradually become illegible under the rain and the dust, and are probably gone by now:

23994 = Il dort.  Quoique le sort fût pour lui bien étrange.

22982 = Il vivait.  Il mourut quand il n’eut plus son ange.

15117 = La chose simplement d’elle-même arriva,

81917

He is asleep.  Though his mettle was sorely tried,

He lived, and when he lost his angel, died.

It happened calmly, on its own,

The way night comes when day is done.

96818

In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations; when they are over, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the terrible or fearsome Judge will judge his people. The End.

Section III

Structure of Gylfaginning

Alpha and Omega

Snorri Sturluson‘s Gylfaginning concerns Man‘s Quest for Knowledge of Man‘s own Creation as part Matter/Earth and part Spirit. The first two chapters describe the prelude to the Instruction received by Gangleri in Háva Höll (Palace of the Highest) in the following chapters.

Immediately after Gangleri has concluded his Quest and become “Fróðari” – Wiser – Gylfaginning ends with a short Chapter 54 where Gangleri, as if awakened from a dream, finds himself on a plain field where Háva Höll and his Tri-Unite Instructor (Hárr/High, Jafnhárr/Equally high and Þriði/Third) are nowhere to be seen.

Gangleri then goes home and shares with others tales of what he has seen and heard. His listeners then related these “stories“ to others. The brief last chapter ends with a statement to the effect that at some distant time people would not “doubt“ that all the characters and events described in the tales concern ONE rather than MANY beings.

I construe this to mean that the Quest for Knowledge is INTERNAL to Man‘s Mind, defined by the stories told in Chapters 3-53.

In Cipher Form, this construction may be expressed by the sum 5327 + 4000 = 9327, as in 4819 + 6960 – 5596 + 3144 = 9327, where

16190 = þá stendr hann úti á sléttum velli,

*Thereupon Gangleri heard great noises on every side of him; and then, when he had looked about him more, lo, he stood out of doors on a level plain, and saw no hall there and no castle. Then he went his way forth and came home into his kingdom, and told those tidings which he had seen and heard; and after him each man told these tales to the other.

Yes, the light of the genius crossed my mind. I saw again, I understood! I knew now this fabulous secret. And marvellous, when from the leaps of the four horsemen, the shoes of one horse had left four imprints on the rock, here is the sign which DELACROIX had given in one of three pictures from the chapel of Angels. 12381 = And I by this wil be a gainer too,

APPENDIX 2

Ten Zodiac Signs

Le Serpent Rouge – Translation

(Marcus Williamson and Corella Hughes)

# 1 Aquarius

14359 = de l’arc-en-ciel donnent l’unité blanche,

144309

How strange are the manuscripts of this Friend, great traveller of the unknown, they appeared to me separately, yet they form a whole for him who knows that the colours of the rainbow give a white unity, or for the Artist for whom the black springs out from under his paintbrush, made from the six colours of his magic palette.

# 2  Pisces

22663 = Peut-être comme le nautonnier de l’arche imperissable,

120652

This Friend, how to introduce him to you?  His name remained a mystery, but his number is that of a famous seal.  How to describe him to you?  Perhaps like the pilot of the indestructible ark, impassive like a column on his white rock scanning towards the south beyond the black rock.

# 3 Aries

133711

During my testing pilgrimage I tried to clear a path with the sword, cossing the inextricable vegetation of the woods, I wanted to reach the residence of the sleeping BEAUTY in whom certain poets saw the QUEEN of a past realm.  In desperation of finding my way again the parchments of this Friend were for me, the thread of Ariadne.

# 4  Taurus

120619

Thanks to him, from now on by measured steps and a sure eye, I can discover the sixty-four dispersed stones of the perfect cube that the brothers of the BEAUTY of the black wood escaping in the pursuit of the usurpers, had scattered on their way whilst they fled from the white Fort.

# 5 Gemini

171336

To reassemble the scattered stones, work with the square and compass to put them back in regular order, look for the line of the meridian in going from the East to the West, then looking from the South to the North, finally in all directions to obtain the desired solution, stopping in front of the fourteen stones with a cross.  The circle being the ring and the crown, and to him the diadem of this QUEEN of Castel.

# 6 Cancer

24056 = pouvaient-être alternativement blanches ou noires,

17622 = N’étant pas HERCULE à la puissance magique,

211022

The stones of the mosaic paving of the sacred place could be alternatively black or white, and JESUS like ASMODEUS, observing their alignment, my view seems incapable of seeing the summit where the marvellous sleeping one remained hidden.  Not being HERCULES with magic power, how to decode the mysterious symbols carved by the observers of the past.  In the sanctuary however the stoup, fountain of love of the believers, reminds us of these words: BY THIS SIGN YOU SHALL CONQUER.

# 7 Leo

12599 = Jadis les uns l’avaient nommée:

16867 = ISIS, reine des sources bienfaisantes,

19012 = VENEZ A MOI VOUS TOUS QUI SOUFFREZ

18570 = ET QUI ETES ACCABLES ET JE VOUS SOULAGERAI,

6982 = d’autres: MADELAINE,

165412

From her that I wanted to free, rose towards me the emanations of perfume which permeate the sepulchre. Once some called her: ISIS, queen of the beneficent springs, COME TO ME ALL YOU WHO SUFFER AND WHO ARE OVERWHELMED AND I WILL COMFORT YOU, otherwise: MADELEINE, with the famous vase full of healing balm. The initiates know the true name: NOTRE DAME DES CROSS.

# 8 Virgo

15678 = perplexe devant l’enigme : “ET IN ARCADIA EGO…”!

275473

I was like the shepherds of the famous painter POUSSIN, confused in front of  the enigma: “ET IN ARCADIA EGO…”! The voice of the blood [race] would it show me the image of an ancestral past. Here is the seventh sentence which a hand had traced: DELIVER ME FROM THE MIRE, SO THAT I DO NOT STAY THERE SINKING. Two times IS, embalmer and embalmed, miraculous vase of the eternal White Lady of Legends.

# 9 Libra

11067 = Commencé dans les ténèbres,

20123 = mon voyage ne pouvait s’achever qu’en Lumière.

9986 = avec ses 35 centimètres!

14300 = Me voici donc à mon tour cavalier

18542 = sur le coursier divin chevauchant l’abîme.

167450

Started in the shadows, my journey could only be finished in light. At the window of the ruined house I gazed across the trees stripped by autumn to the summit of the mountain. The cross of crete stood out under the midday sun, it was the fourteenth and the biggest of all with its 35 centimetres! Here I am therefore on my horse ride [tour] on a divine steed crossing the abyss.

# 10 Scorpio

10350 = à celle de l’S, puis de l’S au P …

378071

Celestial vision for him who remembers the four works of Em. SIGNOL around the Meridian line, to the choir itself from the sanctuary from which beams this source of love from one to another, I turn around passing the site of the rose of the P to that of the S, then from the S to the P … and the spiral in my mind becoming like a monstrous octopus expelling its ink, the shadows obscure the light, I am dizzy and I hold my hand to my mouth biting instinctively my palm, perhaps like OLIER in his coffin. Curses, I understand the truth, HE IS GONE, but to him too in doing THE GOOD, like HIM of the flowery tomb. But how many have sacked the HOUSE, leaving only the embalmed corpses and numerous metal objects which they could not carry? What strange mystery conceals the new temple of SOLOMON built by the children of Saint VINCENT?

²Background on Kabbalah

The most influential Kabbalistic text was The Zohar, which was probably written in about 1275 by the Spanish mystic Moses of Leon [who] believed that God gives each mystic a unique and personal revelation, so there is no limit to the way the Torah can be interpreted: as the Kabbalist progresses, layer upon layer of significance is revealed. The Zohar shows the mysterious emanation of the ten sefiroth as a process whereby the impersonal En Sof becomes a personality. In the three highest sefiroth – Kether, Hokhmah and Binah – when, as it were, En Sof has only just „decided“ to express himself, the divine reality is called „he.“ As „he“ descends through the middle sefiroth – Hesed, Din, Tifereth, Netsakh, Hod and Yesod – „he“ becomes „you.“ Finally, when God becomes present in the world in the Shekinah, „he“ calls himself „I.“ It is at this point, where God has, as it were, become an individual and his self-expression is complete, that man can begin his mystical journey. Once the mystic has acquired an understanding of his own deepest self, he becomes aware of the Presence of God within him and can then ascend to the more impersonal higher spheres, transcending the limits of personality and egotism. It is a return to the unimaginable Source of our being and the hidden world of sense impression is simply the last and outer-most shell of the divine reality. (Karen Armstrong, A History of God, Ballantine Books, New York, 1993, p. 247)“

Gylfaginning – Translation

(Internet)

Ch. 1

King Gylfi ruled the land that men now call Sweden. It is told of him that he gave to a wandering woman, in return for her merry-making, a plow-land in his realm, as much as four oxen might turn up in a day and a night. But this woman was of the kin of the Æsir; she was named Gefjun. She took from the north, out of Jötunheim, four oxen which were the soils of a certain giant and, herself, and set them before the plow. And the plow cut so wide and so deep that it loosened up the land; and the oxen drew the land out into the sea and to the westward, and stopped in a certain sound. There Gefjun set the land, and gave it a name, calling it Selund. And from that time on, the spot whence the land had been torn up is water: it is now called the Lögr in Sweden; and bays lie in that lake even as the headlands in Selund. Thus says Bragi, the ancient skald:

Gefjun drew from Gylfi | gladly the wave-trove’s free-hold,
Till from the running beasts | sweat reeked, to Denmark’s increase;
The oxen bore, moreover, | eight eyes, gleaming brow-lights,
O’er the field’s wide: booty, | and four heads in their plowing.

Ch. 2

King Gylfi was a wise man and skilled in magic; he was much troubled that the Æsir-people were so cunning that all things went according to their will. He pondered whether this might proceed from their own nature, or whether the divine powers which they worshipped might ordain such things. He set out on his way to Ásgard, going secretly, and- clad himself in the likeness of an old man, with which he dissembled. But the Æsir were wiser in this matter, having second sight; and they saw his journeying before ever he came, and prepared against him deceptions of the eye. When he came into the town, he saw there a hall so high that he could not easily make out the top of it: its thatching was laid with golden shields after the fashion of a shingled roof. So also says Thjódólfr of Hvin, that Valhall was thatched with shields:

On their backs they let beam, | sore battered with stones,
Odin’s hall-shingles, | the shrewd sea-farers.

In the hall-doorway Gylfi saw a man juggling with anlaces, having seven in the air at one time. This man asked of him his name. He called himself Gangleri, and said he had come by the paths of the serpent, and prayed for lodging for the night, asking: „Who owns the hall?“ The other replied that it was their king; „and I will attend thee to see him; then shalt thou thyself ask him concerning his; name;“ and the man wheeled about before him into the hall, and he went after, and straightway the door closed itself on his heels. There he saw a great room and much people, some with games, some drinking; and some had weapons and were fighting. Then he looked about him, and thought unbelievable many things which he saw; and he said:

All the gateways | ere one goes out
Should one scan:
For ‘t is uncertain | where sit the unfriendly
On the bench before thee.

He saw three high-seats, each above the other, and three men sat thereon,-one on each. And he asked what might be the name of those lords. He who had conducted him in answered that the one who, sat on the nethermost high-seat was a king, „and his name is Hárr; – High – but the next is named Janhárr; – Equally High – and he who is uppermost is called Thridi.“ – Third – Then Hárr asked the newcomer whether his errand were more than for the meat and drink which were always at his command, as for every one there in the Hall of the High One. He answered that he first desired to learn whether there were any wise man there within. Hárr said, that he should not escape whole from thence unless he were wiser.

And stand forth while you are instructed;

He who instructs shall sit. [Translation G.T.]

¹A New Breed of Men Sent Down from Heaven

Now the last age by Cumae’s Sibyl sung has come and gone, and the majestic roll of circling centuries begins anew: justice returns, returns old Saturn’s reign, with a new breed of men sent down from heaven.  Only do thou, at the boy’s birth in whom the iron shall cease, the golden race arise, befriend him, chaste Lucina; ‘tis thine own Apollo reigns.  And in thy consulate, this glorious age, O Pollio, shall begin, and the months enter on their mighty march.  Under thy guidance, whatso tracks remain of our old wickedness, once done away, shall free the earth from never-ceasing fear.  He shall receive the life of gods, and see heroes with gods commingling, and himself be seen of them, and with his father’s worth reign o’er a world of peace.

²Snorri Sturluson‘s Advice to Young Poets

But now one thing must be said to young skalds, to such as yearn to attain to the craft of poesy and to increase their store of figures with traditional metaphors; or to those who crave to acquire the faculty of discerning what is said in hidden phrase: let such an one, then, interpret this book to his instruction and pleasure. Yet one is not so to forget or discredit these traditions as to remove from poesy those ancient metaphors with which it has pleased Chief Skalds to be content; nor, on the other hand, ought Christian men to believe in heathen gods, nor in the truth of these tales otherwise than precisely as one may find here in the beginning of the book.

³Abomination of Desolation

²Dante. Paradiso Canto XXXII

Translation by Courtney Langdon, 1920.

Anna thou seest sitting opposite

to Peter, so content to see her daughter,

that never from her doth she move her eyes,

although ‘Hosanna!’ singing; o’er against

the oldest Father of a family

Lucìa sits, who had thy Lady go,

when thou thy brows in downward flight didst turn.

But since apace thy slumber-time is fleeing,

here will we pause, as that good tailor does,

who cuts his gown according to his cloth;

and toward the Primal Love direct our eyes,

that, looking toward Him, thou mayst penetrate

as far into His Splendor as thou canst.

But lest, perchance, by moving thine own wings,

thou shouldst recede, believing to advance,

Grace needs must be obtained for thee by prayer;

Grace from the one who hath the power to help thee;

hence follow after me with thine affection,

that from my words thy heart turn not aside.”

He then began the following holy prayer:

³Dante. Paradiso Canto XXXII

(Courtney Langdon, 1920)

The Empyrean. GOD. St. Bernard’s Prayer to Mary

The Vision of God. Ultimate Salvation

   ”O Virgin Mother, Daughter of thy Son,

humbler and loftier than any creature,

eternal counsel’s predetermined goal,

thou art the one that such nobility

didst lend to human nature, that its Maker

scorned not to make Himself what He had made.

Within thy womb rekindled was the Love,

through whose warm influence in the eternal Peace

this Flower hath blossomed thus. Here unto us

thou art a noonday torch of Charity;

and down below ’mong mortal men, thou art

a living fount of Hope. Lady, so great

thou art, and hast such worth, that one who longs

for Grace, and unto thee hath not recourse,

wingless would wish to have his longing fly.

Not only doth thy Kindliness give help

to him that asketh it, but many times

it freely runs ahead of his request.

In thee is Mercy, Pity is in thee,

in thee Magnificence, and all there is

of Goodness in a creature meets in thee.

Now doth this man, who from the lowest drain

of the Universe hath one by one beheld,

as far as here, the forms of spirit-life,

beseech thee, of thy grace, for so much strength

that with his eyes he may uplift himself

toward Ultimate Salvation higher still.

And I, who never for mine own sight burned

more than I do for his, offer thee all

my prayers, and pray that they be not too poor,

that thou with thy prayers so dissolve each cloud

of his mortality, that unto him

the Highest Pleasure may unfold Itself.

And furthermore, I pray to thee, O Queen,

who canst whate’er thou wilt, that, after such

a sight, thou keep all his affections sound.

His human promptings let thy care defeat;

see with how many blest ones Beatrice

is clasping for my prayers her hands to thee!”

The eyes belovèd and revered by God,

intent on him who prayed, revealed to us

how grateful unto her are earnest prayers.

Thence they addressed them to the Eternal Light,

wherein it may not be believed the eye

of any creature finds so clear a way.

And I, who to the End of all desires

was drawing near, within me, as I ought,

brought to its goal the ardor of desire.

Bernard was smiling, and was making signs

for me to look on high; but, as he wished,

I was already of mine own accord;

because my sight, as purer it became,

was penetrating more and more the radiance

of that High Light, which of Itself is true.

From this time onward greater was my sight

than is our speech, which yields to such a vision,

and memory also yields to such excess.

And such as he, who seeth in a dream,

and after it, the imprinted feeling stays,

while all the rest returns not to his mind;

even such am I; for almost wholly fades

my vision, yet the sweetness which was born

of it is dripping still into my heart.

Even thus the snow is in the sun dissolved;

even thus the Sibyl’s oracles, inscribed

on flying leaves, were lost adown the wind.

O Light Supreme, that dost uplift Thyself

so far from mortal thought, relend my mind

a little of what Thou didst seem to be,

and cause my tongue to be so powerful,

that of Thy Glory it may leave at least

a spark unto the people still to come;

for to my mem’ry if it but a while

return, and speak a little in these lines,

more of Thy Victory will be conceived.

I think the keenness of the living Ray

which I endured would have confounded me,

if from it I had turned away mine eyes.

And I recall that I, because of this,

the bolder was to bear it, till I made

my vision one with Value Infinite.

O the abundant Grace, whereby I dared

to pierce the Light Eternal with my gaze,

until I had therein exhausted sight!

I saw that far within its depths there lies,

by Love together in one volume bound,

that which in leaves lies scattered through the world;

substance and accident, and modes thereof,

fused, as it were, in such a way, that that,

whereof I speak, is but One Simple Light.

This union’s general form I think I saw,

since, saying so, I feel that I the more

rejoice. Of more forgetfulness for me

one moment is, than centuries twenty-five

are for the enterprise which once caused Neptune

to wonder at the shadow Argo cast.

My mind, thus wholly in suspense, was gazing

steadfast and motionless, and all intent,

and, gazing, grew enkindled more and more.

Such in that Light doth one at last become,

that one can never possibly consent

to turn therefrom for any other sight;

because the Good, which is the will’s real object,

is therein wholly gathered, and, outside,

that is defective which is perfect there.

Ev’n as to what I do remember, mine

will now be shorter than an infant’s speech,

who at the breast still bathes his tongue. ’T was not

that there was other than a simple semblance

within the Living Light wherein I gazed,

which always is what It hath been before;

but through my sight, which in me, as I looked,

was gathering strength, because I changed, one sole

appearance underwent a change for me.

Within the Lofty Light’s profound and clear

subsistence there appeared to me three Rings,

of threefold color and of one content;

and one, as Rainbow is by Rainbow, seemed

reflected by the other, while the third

seemed like a Fire breathed equally from both.

Oh, how, to my conception, short and weak

is speech! And this, to what I saw, is such,

that it is not enough to call it small.

O LIGHT ETERNAL, THAT ALONE DOST DWELL

WITHIN THYSELF, ALONE DOST UNDERSTAND

THYSELF, AND LOVE AND SMILE UPON THYSELF.

SELF-UNDERSTANDING AND SELF-UNDERSTOOD!

That Circle which appeared to be conceived

within Thyself as a Reflected Light,

when somewhat contemplated by mine eyes,

within Itself, of Its own very color,

to me seemed painted with our Human Form;

whence wholly set upon It was my gaze.

Like the geometer, who gives himself

wholly to measuring the circle, nor,

by thinking, finds the principle he needs;

ev’n such was I at that new sight. I wished

to see how to the Ring the Image there

conformed Itself, and found therein a place;

but mine own wings were not enough for this;

had not my mind been smitten by a flash

of light, wherein what it was willing came.

Here power failed my high imagining;

but, like a smoothly moving wheel, that Love

was now revolving my desire and will,

which moves the sun and all the other stars.
